Alex Honnold

World-Renowned Rock Climber & Environmental Advocate
Mira Loma HS

Alex Honnold is a professional rock climber known around the world for pushing the boundaries of human potential. A pioneer of free-solo climbing—ascending massive cliffs without ropes or safety gear—Alex is best known for his historic rope-free ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan, featured in the Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo.

A Mira Loma High School graduate and Sacramento native, Alex began climbing at age 11 and went on to attend UC Berkeley before dedicating himself fully to the vertical world. With a mix of humility, focus, and mental discipline, he’s completed some of the most daring climbs ever recorded, including Yosemite’s “Triple Solo” and first-time solo ascents in Zion and Patagonia.

Beyond climbing, Alex is the founder of the Honnold Foundation, which supports global access to solar energy and sustainable solutions. Despite global fame, he remains deeply committed to simplicity, environmental stewardship, and living in alignment with his values—often from the back of his van.
